Dr Halsey’s Personal Journal

8 August 2510 to 21 July 2517

Context: This journal contains the personal thoughts of Dr Catherine Halsey, the founder of the Spartan-II program, from the period 8 August 2510 to 30 August 2552. As the book covers such a long period of time I have separated it into smaller chunks so that other media taking place during this time period can be inserted where necessary. Personally I feel it reads better this way as it provides additional insights into the larger Halo story in a way that almost feels like deleted scenes.

Summary: Dr Halsey talks about the early predevelopment days of the Spartan-II program, its predecessor and how she became involved in the project. She also gives some historical context to the tensions between the Inner and Outer Colonies.

Halo: The Fall Of Reach | Chapter 1 & 2

17 August 2517

Context: Halo: The Fall Of Reach covers the period from 17 August 2517 to 30 August 2552. As the book covers such a long period of time I have separated it into smaller chunks so that other media taking place during this time period can be inserted where necessary. However, if you’ve never read this book I recommend reading it all the way through without the detours to other media.

Summary: Chapter 1 & 2 introduces us to Dr Halsey, the founder of the Spartan-II program, and her chaperone for this stage of the program, Lieutenant Jacob Keyes. Together they travel to the planet Eridanus II where they meet a six year old boy, perfect for Dr Halsey’s program.

Pariah | Prologue & Chapter 1

circa August 2517

Context: A short story from Halo: Evolutions – Essential Tales from the Halo Universe. This story begins in the early days of the Spartan-II program and ends shortly after the Spartans go through their augmentation process. However, I have broken this story up into smaller chunks as much of the events can be interwoven with Halo: The Fall of Reach and Dr Halsey’s Journal, which together provide a much broader view on the larger Halo story. However, if you’ve never read this story I recommend reading it all the way through without the detours to other media.

Summary: Dr Halsey meets a six year old boy called Soren and offers him the choice of joining her Spartan-II program. We also learn how Soren lost his parents prior to Dr Haley’s visit.

Summary: Dr Halsey notes the exceptional strength and intellect of some of the candidates, and parts ways with Jacob Keyes.

Halo: The Fall Of Reach | Chapter 3 & 4

23 September 2517 to 25 September 2517

Summary: Dr Halsey welcomes the candidates to Reach where Chief Petty Officer Mendez begins their training.

Summary: The candidates struggle with adjusting to their new life, Dr Halsey reflects on the suffering of the candidates’ parents and the flash clones that replaced their children, and leaders begin to emerge amongst the candidates.

Halo: The Fall Of Reach | Chapter 5

12 July 2519

Summary: The candidates are individually dropped into the wilderness with one piece of a larger map and the mission of finding and reach the extraction point. However, the last trainee to the extraction point will be left behind unless John-117 can come up with a plan to get them all home.

27 September 2520 to 5 June 2522

Summary: The candidates experience their first casualty, Dr Halsey develops new AI algorithms and is officially given the role of ONI’s Chief Scientist.

Pariah | Chapter 2

Summary: Soren senses he is different to the other recruits and begins to enjoy the life of being a trainee.

Halo: Contact Harvest

16 June 2524 to 23 February 2525

Context: Set 28 years before Halo: Combat Evolved this novel takes place away from the Spartan-II programme and showcases humanities first encounter with the Covenant.

Summary: Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson is transferred to the colony world of Harvest where he must train a local militia to defend against potential Insurrectionist attacks. However, they soon find themselves defending Harvest from a new threat, an alien empire known as The Covenant.

Further reading: The following journal entries by Dr Halsey take place alongside the novel Halo: Contact Harvest. The first entry below is set after chapter 2. The second is set before chapter 4. Although, neither entry relates to the events of Contact Harvest so if you choose to read these entries here, they are best prefaced with the thought, “Meanwhile, elsewhere in the galaxy…”

circa late February 2525

Summary: Dr Halsey offers Soren the choice of whether to proceed with the augmentation phase or not.

Further reading: This scene is foreshadowed in Dr Halsey’s journal entry for 23 February 2525, which is likely set before chapter 3 of Pariah.

Summary: The augmentation phase of the Spartan-II programme begins.

March 2525

Summary: Soren undergoes his augmentation procedures.

Halo: The Fall Of Reach | Chapter 7

30 March 2525 to 22 April 2525

Summary: With the augmentation process complete, the surviving Spartans say goodbye to those that died. Then 23 days later, John is confronted by an aggressive squad of ODSTs, which leads to an altercation in the gym.

Further reading: This chapter is split into two scenes, one on 30 March and one on 22 April. However, Dr Halsey’s journal entry on 1 April 2525 reveals an interesting twist regarding the funeral services on 30 March: the canisters were empty!

Pariah | Chapter 5 to Epilogue

circa June 2525 to March 2526

Summary: Three months after chapter 4, Soren wakes up from a coma to find his body has been mutilated by the augmentation process. From there we skip through the weeks and months in Soren’s story.

27 June 2525 to 1 September 2525

Summary: Dr Halsey relocates to CASTLE Base and writes extensive notes on the development of Mjolnir.
