These four issues of Halo: Escalation cover The Janus Key story arc which returns to the principal plot threads of Halo 4: Spartan Ops, continuing the ongoing conflict between the UNSC Infinity and Jul ‘Mdama’s forces and their struggle for control of the Janus Key. [Halopedia]

The events take place from 15 July 2558 to 23 July 2558.

16 July 2558 // Halo: The Machine Breaks

#shortstory #waypointchronicle

The Machine Breaks is A Halo Waypoint Chronicle, an ongoing series of short stories available for free from Halo Waypoint.

The story takes place predominantly from 16 July 2558 to 22 July 2558, around the events of Halo: Escalation #13 to #16, where Dr. Catherine Halsey and Covenant Supreme Leader Jul ‘Mdama seek to reunite both halves of the Janus Key. One part of the story is even adapted directly from Halo: Escalation #15 – The Janus Key (Part 3).

Whilst both these stories overlap, I recommend reading Halo: Escalation #13 to #16 before Halo: The Machine Breaks for the best reading experience.

As Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant grows stronger through acquisition of powerful Forerunner technology, one malfunctioning Promethean Knight discovers the last vestiges of its humanity.

The final section of the story takes place on 28 October 2558. It features and expands upon the following scene from the final mission (Guardians) of Halo 5: Guardians.

Halo: New Blood | Coda

circa October 2558

Context: At the end of the print edition of Halo: New Blood is a bonus chapter titled, Coda. It is set three years after the rest of the book and takes place shortly before Halo 5: Guardians.

Summary: Spartan Edward Buck talks with Veronica Dare about joining Fireteam Osiris.

Glassed

25 October 2558

Context: A short story included in the 2024 rerelease of Halo: Battle Born. This story takes place in between the opening cut scene of the third mission, called Glassed, of Halo 5: Guardians and the start of the mission’s gameplay. The opening cut scene is set on the UNSC Infinity and features a conversation with Dr Halsey, Roland and Captain Lasky. This is followed by a scene between Spartans Edward Buck and Jameson Locke which ends with a fade to black and that is where this short story fits. Following the events of the short story we resume the opening cut scene with an establishing shot of the planet Meridian where the Spartans’ Pelican arrives. From there the mission’s gameplay begins.

Summary: Aboard a Pelican, en route to the planet Meridian, Spartans Holly Tanaka and Jameson Locke share memories of their past.

25 October 2558 – 28 October 2558

Context: A short story from Halo: Fractures – Extraordinary Tales from the Halo Canon. This story begins during the sixth mission, called Evacuation, of Halo 5: Guardians and continues alongside the events of the game, up until its end.

Summary: After a Forerunner guardian rises from the ground and attacks Meridian, Evelyn Collins is left behind looking for away off this inhospitable world.
